Vienna – Schnitzel & More

When thinking about Vienna, the Schnitzel, the Danube and the Waltz comes first on your mind. And of course, every Vienna visit should include in a Wiener Schnitzel, a Melange and an apple strudel fresh from the oven.

The roots of Austria’s capital (population appr. 1.9 Mio) is pre-roman, the history of the city’s face dates to the 13th century. Today Vienna is home to many international organisations and well known for its superb quality of living, for which Vienna receives regularly international awards.

The flair of the former Habsburger Metropolis can still be felt when strolling along the Ring and the 1st District. But there is much more to discover than Schloss Schöbrunn, Imperial Castle and St. Stephan’s Cathedral.

We have handpicked our top spots in Vienna and Enjoy reading and discovering it!

01 Wiener Wald Nussberg

The Nussberg is my absolute favourite place in Vienna, hard to believe that you are still within the city limits there.

Located on the outskirts of Vienna, the Nussberg offers a wonderful view over the city and the Danube and you can not only enjoy Vienna and the sun, but also the Viennese wine amid the vineyards.

For the sporty, it can be combined with a short hike, or you take the bus to the Kahlenberg or take the Heurigen Express.

02 Café Vollpengion

We can all participate and enjoy cakes and tarts with a lot of love. The cakes are all baked by grandmas and grandpas using their tried and tested recipes. Find out more about Vollpengion.

03 Trzesniewski

Trzesniewski has been a Viennese institution since 1902 and is located near St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The special thing about it is that the toppings are crushed into spreads and can practically be eaten by hand.

Either as a refreshment for city explorer or when you have something to celebrate, take a few rolls with you and go to the nearby champagne bar Le Cru and enjoy with a glass of champagne (different types by glass).

Alternatively, you can also go to/from Bratislava by bus.

04 Excursion Bratislava

You can take a boat on the Danube from Vienna’s Schwedenplatz to the old town of Bratislava in just 75 minutes. On a leisurely day tour, you stroll through the historical centre, visit the castle, which offers a wonderful view of the city and the Danube, as well as visit the beautifully landscaped castle garden.

For the sporty, there is also the option of starting from Vienna by bike or e-bike. From the Danube Island the route leads over the Donauauen National Park, past the beautiful castles Orth or Eckartsau, which are wonderful for a short break.

05 Strandbar Herrmann

Enjoy cocktails and stick your feet into the sand. With a beautiful view of the Urania and the Danbue Canal, you can also enjoy the sunset here. What even many Viennese do not know: The beach bar is in Herrmannpark, which was named after the forgotten inventor of the postcard – Emmanuel Herrmann, and which also owes its name too.

06 Stadtpark Cafe Pruckel

For a little Viennese city and park flair, visit the great Wiener Stadtpark as well as Café Prückel, which is popular among Viennese and students.

Opened in 1903, the café has a long history and is known for its 1950s style furnishings. Not only the interior design is impressive, but also the pastries, such as freshly baked strudel and the classic coffee specialties such as “Maria Theresia” or “Archduke Johann”.

07 Prater

The Liliputbahn is also one of Prater’s landmarks and continues to fascinate both young and old children. Who does not know it, the Vienna Ferris Wheel!

But Prater is not only known for the amusement park, but also for the local recreation area. Long walks make you forget that you are in the middle of the city.

The unique bike rental shop next to the Hochschaubahn can upgrade with another special feature – 4-person rickshaws for the whole family or romantic for two.

08 Stadtwanderweg 4

The city hike leads through the Dehnepark to the Jubiläumswarte. Through the Dehnepark, which impresses with its 50,000-nature park-like square kilometres and also includes parts of the Wienerwald, it goes up a full 220 metres to the Jubiläumswarte – with a distant view from the Schneeberg to the Ötscher.

Streams, bridges, ponds make the hike exciting for young and old. But the park also invites you to and idyllic picnic.

09 Wine Hike

From Unterloiben you approach the striking Loibenberg with its spectacular stone terraces on this wonderful wine hike at the entrance to the Wachau. The world famous Smaragdweine are hand-picked here.

At medium altitude, a panorama path leads along the Loibenberg, from which you can also marvel at the winding of the Danube around the Loibenberg further down. If you feel like it, you can finally climb the Dürnstein ruins.

10 Alte Donau

It’s possible on the Alte Donau in Vienna! Escape the hustle and bustle of the city and settle in on your small island.

Whether you want to enjoy a meal on the shore of the lake (Restaurant Zur alten Kaisermühle – very good Spareribs and fish grilled over charcoal), rent a boat, take a swim or just go for a walk and relax Alte Donau offers you a variety of activities.
